Death and the eternal life

Today coincidently I heard the death of three people. Two of whom I knew remotely but had involvement and impact on my life.
Death is perhaps the only clear truth because that is where your real journey begins. It is the fear of the unknown which is the most scary. What happens after death? I think its rather what would be your fate after death...the assessment & evaluation of our deeds. now that's scary!
Theologies offer varying perspectives abt life after death but what is absolutely logical is that being good should reward you and committing bad deeds shall be punished.
I didn't use the word sins because the perception of good and bad varies from person to person subjective to their religion, their depth of belief and their actual application of their religion in their daily lives (which are all really different parameters).
Now that was from a completely theist point of view, as for the atheists out there I find you all lost.
My favorite people are not muslims, my favorite people are those who fear their LORD. Because all religions preach morality and the value of ethics. Cz at least people who believe in any form(s) of Lord would fear the consequences before doing bad/immoral acts!!
I am getting all emotional but death is something we shall all face and we must prepare irrespective of our age.
Being informed is the least we can do :P
We come on earth for such a short time compared to the eternity lying beyond and hence it becomes so important that our walk here shld be able to ultimately touch lives.
I cant say when I will be ready to die but just hope that whenever I die there are people who care and pray for my maghfirat.
A concluding thought--
There are two ways a man comes closer to their Lord; either the Bounties of Paradise or the Blazing Fire of Hell. Death is the shock entrance to those fates.

A few Islamic References:

Quran:

Every soul shall have a taste of death: And only on the Day of Judgment shall you be paid your full recompense. Only he who is saved far from the Fire and admitted to the Garden will have attained the object (of Life): For the life of this world is but goods and chattels of deception. (3:185)
...And if any of you Turn back from their faith and die in unbelief, their works will bear no fruit in this life and in the Hereafter; they will be companions of the Fire and will abide therein. (2:217)
Say: Allah gives you life, then He makes you die, then will He gather you to the day of resurrection wherein is no doubt, but most people do not know. (45:26)
These are Allah's limits, and whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger, He will cause him to enter gardens beneath which rivers flow, to abide in them; and this is the great success. (4:13)

Hadith (Sahih Bukhari):

Narrated Anas bin Malik: Allah's Apostle said, "When carried to his grave, a dead person is followed by three, two of which return (after his burial) and one remains with him: his relative, his property, and his deeds follow him; relatives and his property go back while his deeds remain with him." Sahih Bukhari:Volume 8, Book 76, Number 521.
Our deeds are all that will remain with us, so we must be sure that they, inshallah are good deeds. We must further remember the prophet's saying, "O Allah! There is no life worth living except the life of the Hereafter..." (Narrated by Anas in sahih Bukhari: Volume 8, Book 76, Number 422)
