Understanding the Importance of Hijab

Do you identify yourself amongst these?

  • I think I am a better Muslims than those who do Hijab and commit sins
  • My mother, father or husband preventme from wearing it, and if I disobey them I will go to the Fire
  • I am afraid that after I wear Hijab I will take it off just as many others have done so
  • I won’t be emplloyed if I wear Hijab
  • I feel very hot and bothered in my Hijab
  • I know the Hijab is obligatory, but I will wear it when Allah guides me to do so or gives Hiidayat
  • I wish to be a Moderate Modern Muslim and not an extremist
  • Its not time for that yet. I’m still too young for wearing the Hijab.
  • I will wear it when I am older
Points to ponder…
  • Isn’t it strange that we are prepared to copy our unveiled friends but we feel shy to copy the wives of the Prophet (peace be upon him)- The mothers of the believers??
  • Just as prized possessions are wrapped and covered against evils and things which spoil it,
  • A true Muslimah is more valuable than perishable possessions, she covers herself in order to remain pure and distant from the molestation perpetrated by man.
  • Hijab is an honor and protection for women as well as a symbol of true freedom for her body from the hands and eyes of aggressors and molesters
  • The heat of Hell would be hotter than the heat one feels here?

Commandments from Allah in the Quran

Surah An-Noor

“And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and guard their private parts and not expose
their adornment except that which of; (must ordinarily) appear thereof; that they should draw
their veils over their Juyubihinna.”  [Qur’an, 24:31]
Juyubhinna in Arabic language means covering the body including the neck and the bosoms.

Surah Al- Ahzab

“O prophet tell your wives, your daughters, and the women of the believers to draw their
veils over their bodies. That is more suitable that they will be known (as a chaste believing
woman) and not molested…” [Qur’an 33:59]

In this verse Allah has made the adherence to Hijab a manifestation of chastity, modesty, and
purity

It is in this Ayah that it has been commanded to wear a abaya or burqa over your bodies

Allah states further in this Ayah:
"... And let them not stamp their feet so as to reveal what they hide of their adornments "
The women in the time of the Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) wore anklets which could be employed to attract attention by stamping their feet, thereby, making the anklets
tinkle.
This practice is not only forbidden by Allah, but shows that the legs and ankles are to be
covered as well.

“And when you ask them (i.e. the Prophet’s wives) for something, ask them from behind a partition. That is pure for your hearts and their hearts.” [Qur’an 33:53]
Hijab Preserves the purity of women
When the adornments Allah has favored a woman with are screened, there is a far less possibility of sinful actions leading to promiscuity and transgression. Thus Hijab cuts off ill thoughts and the greed of the sick hearts.

The Hadith in support

Abu Dawood narrated Aisha (RA)
Asma'a the daughter of Abu Bakr (RA) came to see the Messenger of Allah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) wearing a thin dress; so Allah's Messenger (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) turned away from her and said:
"0 Asma'a, once a woman reaches the age of puberty, no part of her body should be seen but this -and he pointed to his face and hands."

Al-Qurtubi narrated Aisha (RA)

AI-Qurtubi reports a narration from Ayesha (RA) that some women from Banu Tamim came to see her wearing transparent clothing, Ayesha said to them:
"If you are believing women, these are not the clothes of believing women."
He also reports that a bride came to see wearing a sheer, transparent khimaar, whereupon Ayesha (RA) said:
"A woman who wears such clothing does not believe in Surah An-Nur."

The garment should be thick and opaque so as not to display skin color and form of the body beneath it. Delicate or transparent clothing does not constitute a proper covering.

What you should know:

Surah An Noor

"Verily ,those who like that (the crime of) illegal sexual intercourse should be propagated
among those who believe, they will have a painful torment in this world and in the hereafter. And Allah knows and you know not."                [Qur’an An-Nur 24:19]

Intention of Hijab
  • The first step on the road to hijab is the proper intention (Niy’yah).
  • The wearing of the hijab is the compliance to the command of Allah (SWT), therefore it can be classified as an act of worship.
  • The hijab must be worn for no other reason except to comply with the order of Allah (SWT), solely for His (SWT) sake and seeking His (SWT) Pleasure.
  • If it is not done with this sincere intention, then it becomes an act of either "Hypocrisy" or of "Ar-Riyaa (showing off)"
A finishing note…

May Allah give all the Muslimah out there the strength of Iman, to be able to stand up against the wrongdoers.

Don’t be scared what people will say, think what Allah thinks about you!

You may be shy as to what your ‘uncles’, ‘friends’, ‘cousins’ would think.

They would admire and respect you and even if they do taunt or tease you, remember you are doing this to please Allah.

And Allah knows best
